How the mirror stays in lockstep.

Four deterministic stages. No CDN cache, no third-party fetcher, no re-encoded copies — the bytes on disk are the upstream bytes, signed and hashable.

  1. 01

    upstream poll

    Every 15 minutes a cron worker walks the 184 upstream manifest feeds (releases.ubuntu.com, download.fedoraproject.org, archive.archlinux.org, cdimage.debian.org, and 180 others). When a new ISO appears in a release directory the worker stages its URL, filename, and declared SHA-256 into a queue.

  2. 02

    rsync to falkenstein

    Staged URLs are fetched over rsync to a dedicated Hetzner FS-1 storage server in Falkenstein, Germany. We rsync (not HTTP) so the upstream’s own mirror network treats us as a peer — we bypass throttles and get the file in one stream with no caching layer in between.

  3. 03

    sha-256 verify

    Once the rsync completes, a worker recomputes SHA-256 on the local copy and compares it byte-for-byte against the manifest entry published by the distribution’s release signing process. Any mismatch halts publication and pages the on-call indexer. We have shipped zero mismatched ISOs since 2019.

  4. 04

    magnet packaging

    Verified ISOs are passed through our standard torrent packaging pipeline (the same one that publishes every other entry on BitTorrentShare): a v2-only torrent is generated, indexed for search, and a magnet link with the SHA-256 embedded in the xt parameter is published. The ISO is now discoverable at /linux/ within an average of 1.8 seconds of verification.

Operated from dedicated Hetzner and OVH bare-metal across 4 datacenters (Falkenstein, Strasbourg, Helsinki, Beauharnois). No container orchestration, no managed Kubernetes, no third-party CDN — every byte passes through machines we admin directly.
